The WoW Forever warlock is still the class that kills slowly and almost never stops: you put damage-over-time effects on the target, keep a demon at your side and turn health into mana when you need it. The news is in the details: Curse of Agony becomes Bane of Agony, a separate type of effect that sits alongside your curses; Incinerate, Wrack and Bane of Doom arrive; and all three talent trees have been rebuilt almost from scratch. This guide covers every spec on the same page, with a level 30 talent build you can load into the calculator, which spell goes first, what to look for in gear and how to level.

Everything comes from the beta client (build 1.60.1.70205, level 30) and Blizzard's patch notes. Blizzard has not yet published its written explanation of the warlock, so things may change before November 4.

In short:

  • Affliction: damage over time and drains. Instant Corruption, Bane of Agony, Siphon Life and Drain Life to heal yourself while you hit.
  • Demonology: the demon leads. More stamina, a voidwalker that tanks hits and Soul Link, which passes part of the damage you take to it.
  • Destruction: direct Fire and Shadow damage. Immolate, Conflagrate, a faster Shadow Bolt and Shadowburn to finish.
Role Ranged damage, with a demon
Resource Mana (and health, which you convert into mana with Life Tap)
Armor Cloth
Main stat Spell power, spell hit and spell crit; intellect
Demons Imp at 1, voidwalker at 10, succubus and incubus at 20, felhunter at 30
Talents From 10; at level 30 you have 21 points (26 with the Talented perk from the Legacy)

What changes from Classic

What In Classic In Forever
Curse of Agony One more curse: it competed with Weakness, Recklessness or Tongues Becomes Bane of Agony (level 8). Banes are a separate type: one bane and one curse of yours can be on the same target at once
New banes Did not exist Bane of Havoc (15% of the damage you deal to others also hits the cursed target) and Bane of Doom (level 60, a huge hit after one minute)
New spells — Incinerate (level 40, more damage if the target suffers Immolate) and Wrack (level 40, Shadow damage every second and +10% to your other Shadow effects for 6 s)
Affliction tree — 7 of 17 talents are new: Malediction, Soul Harvest, Improved Drains, Pandemic, Malevolence, Soul Siphon and Wrack at the end; Improved Bane of Agony replaces Improved Curse of Agony
Demonology tree — New: Demonic Aegis, Demonic Energies, Decimation, Demonic Brand, Improved Felhunter, Demonic Knowledge and Demonic Pact; Fel Vitality replaces Fel Stamina
Destruction tree — New: Molten Skin, Bane of Havoc, Fire and Brimstone, Shadow and Flame and Incinerate; Agonizing Flames replaces Improved Searing Pain
Weapon stones Damage only Create Firestone gives 1% spell crit and more Fire damage; Create Spellstone gives 1% spell haste and more Shadow damage
Life Tap Fixed amount Converts health into mana and scales with spirit (Blizzard note of 24-09)

The client also marks as changed from Classic Shadow Bolt, Corruption, Drain Life, Drain Soul, Drain Mana, Siphon Life, Searing Pain, Conflagrate, Health Funnel, Death Coil, Soul Fire, the health and soul stones, Inferno and Portal of Summoning. The warlock spellbook has every rank, with its cost and text compared with Classic.

Blizzard fixes in the beta that are already in the client:

  • Hellfire can now crit (October 1).
  • Soul Harvest gets a new name and finally gives the mana regeneration it promises (October 1).
  • Drain Soul is cut short if you start casting another spell (October 1).
  • The Voidwalker's Sacrifice scales with 10% of your spell healing (September 24).

What you learn from 1 to 40

30 Summon Felhunter Anti-caster demon: Spell Lock and Devour Magic
30 Subjugate Demon Puts an enemy demon of level 32 or lower under your command
36 Create Spellstone Temporary weapon enchant: spell haste and Shadow damage
40 Howl of Terror Up to 5 enemies within 10 yards flee for 10 s
40 Incinerate Direct Fire, 25% more if the target suffers Immolate
40 Wrack Shadow damage every second for 6 s and +10% to your other Shadow effects

Three spells arrive through talents, and the trainer then teaches you their new ranks: Shadowburn (ranks from 20), Conflagrate (from 25) and Siphon Life (from 30). Further on: Death Coil at 42, Soul Fire at 48, Inferno at 50, and Bane of Doom, Portal of Summoning and Ritual of Doom at 60.

The demons, one by one

  • Imp (level 1). Attacks from range with Firebolt and puts Fire Shield on an ally. It cannot take hits. It is the demon for the first levels, and for dungeons when you do not want your demon pulling threat.
  • Voidwalker (level 10). The warlock's tank: Torment draws enemies in, Suffering helps when there are several, and Consume Shadows heals it. Its Sacrifice puts a shield on you when things go wrong. It is the most comfortable demon for leveling solo.
  • Succubus and incubus (level 20). More melee damage than the voidwalker, plus control: Seduction takes a humanoid out of combat, Lash of Pain hits and Soothing Kiss calms. Lesser Invisibility lets you slip past fights.
  • Felhunter (level 30). Built against casters: Spell Lock interrupts, Devour Magic removes magic and heals it, Tainted Blood reduces attack power and Paranoia detects stealth.
  • Infernal (level 50, with Inferno) and doomguard (level 60, with Ritual of Doom or Bane of Doom). Still out of reach in the beta.

Affliction: how it plays

Affliction wins by putting effects on the target and letting them run. Corruption, Bane of Agony and Siphon Life work on their own while you drain life or cast Shadow Bolt, so it handles moving well and fighting two targets at once. It does well solo: the drains heal you and Life Tap restores your mana without sitting down to drink. It struggles when enemies die quickly (in a group, with a tank and three others hitting, effects do not have time to do their job) and against anything that can remove your effects.

Level 30 talents, in order

  1. Improved Corruption (5): takes 2 s off Corruption's cast time, making it instant, and adds 10% damage. It goes first because it changes how you play from level 14.
  2. Malediction (5): 5% more of all your periodic damage. It affects almost everything this spec does.
  3. Improved Drains (3): 20% more damage and health drained on Drain Life, Drain Soul and Wrack. Drain Life is what keeps you alive while leveling.
  4. Fel Concentration (3): a 70% chance for damage not to interrupt your drains. Without it, every enemy hit interrupts Drain Life.
  5. Improved Bane of Agony (2): 10% more damage from your main bane.
  6. Nightfall (2): Corruption, Drain Life, Drain Soul and Wrack can give you Shadow Trance, making your next Shadow Bolt instant. Free damage mid-fight.
  7. Siphon Life (1): another effect that heals you for 30 s. It arrives right at level 30.

With the 5 Talented points: Soul Siphon (3), which raises Drain Life, Drain Soul and Wrack by 12% for each Affliction effect you have on the target (up to 36%), and Soul Harvest (2), which gives you mana regeneration for 10 s every time something afflicted by your Drain Soul dies.

Priority against one target

  1. Corruption (level 4): instant with the talent. First, because it costs no time.
  2. Bane of Agony (level 8): lasts 24 s and does most of its damage at the end; put it up early.
  3. Siphon Life (level 30, talent): heals you for as long as it lasts.
  4. Curse of Weakness (level 4) while leveling, or Curse of Recklessness (level 14) if the target must not flee. Curses do not compete with the bane.
  5. Drain Life (level 14) to fill in if you are short on health; Shadow Bolt (level 1) if you are fine, especially when Nightfall procs.
  6. Drain Soul (level 10) in the target's last seconds, for the soul shard.
  7. Life Tap (level 6) between fights or when you have spare health: the mana comes back without sitting down.

Against several enemies

Spread Corruption and Bane of Agony over two or three targets and let them run. Use Fear (level 8) on one while you finish the other, and the voidwalker so they do not all reach you at once. From 20, Rain of Fire for groups that stand still; from 40, Howl of Terror to get rid of those that reach you.

Stats

Spell power (or Shadow damage) and spell hit come first, with crit behind them; then mana regeneration, intellect and some stamina. Spirit counts for little in the web's calculation, but Life Tap scales with it.

Demonology: how it plays

Demonology makes the demon half of the character. You gain stamina, your voidwalker is tougher, and at level 30 Soul Link passes 30% of the damage you take to it and raises damage for both of you by 3%. It is the hardest spec to kill: it does well solo and in the open world, and the demon can hold an enemy while you put effects on it. It struggles when the demon dies (you re-summon and lose time) and it lacks Destruction's direct damage.

Level 30 talents, in order

  1. Demonic Embrace (5): 15% more total stamina. More health means more Life Tap and more margin.
  2. Fel Vitality (3): 15% more health and mana for all your demons and 15% more mana for you.
  3. Demonic Aegis (2): Demon Skin and Demon Armor are 30% more effective.
  4. Improved Voidwalker (3): your voidwalker's Torment, Consume Shadows, Sacrifice and Suffering are 30% more effective. Your tank holds and taunts better.
  5. Demonic Sacrifice (1): you sacrifice the demon and keep an effect depending on which it was (imp: +15% Shadow damage; voidwalker: you regenerate mana). It is taken mostly because it unlocks Soul Link; you do not use both at once, because Soul Link needs the demon alive.
  6. Master Summoner (2): summoning takes 4 s less and costs 40% less mana. If the demon falls, it comes back quickly.
  7. Fel Domination (1): a near-instant, half-price summon when you need it in the middle of combat.
  8. Demonic Brand (3): your Searing Pain generates less threat and marks the target; your demon's next six attacks against it generate a lot of threat and deal extra damage. This way the voidwalker does not lose the enemy.
  9. Soul Link (1): the demon takes 30% of your damage in your place and both of you deal 3% more.

With the 5 Talented points: Demonic Knowledge (3), which raises your spell damage and your demon's according to your level; Unholy Power (1), more damage from your demons; and the first point of Master Demonologist (1), which gives you and the demon an effect depending on which one you have (with all five: voidwalker −10% physical damage taken, imp +10% Fire damage).

Order Talent Points
1 Demonic Embrace 5
2 Fel Vitality 3
3 Demonic Aegis 2
4 Improved Voidwalker 3
5 Demonic Sacrifice 1
6 Master Summoner 2
7 Fel Domination 1

Priority against one target

  1. Send in the voidwalker (level 10) first and let it take the enemy for a few seconds.
  2. Searing Pain (level 18) once, so Demonic Brand leaves the threat on the demon.
  3. Corruption (level 4) and Bane of Agony (level 8).
  4. Immolate (level 1) if the fight is going to last.
  5. Shadow Bolt (level 1) or Drain Life (level 14) to fill in, depending on what you are short of.
  6. Health Funnel (level 12) if the demon gets low; with the Improved Health Funnel talent it can be used at any health, but it is not in this build.
  7. Drain Soul (level 10) at the end, for the shard.

Against several enemies

The voidwalker with Suffering holds several at once. You spread Corruption and Bane of Agony, and use Fear on one if it breaks toward you. Rain of Fire (20) and Hellfire (30) only if the demon has them all together; Hellfire burns you too, and Soul Link shares that damage.

Stats

The same as in the other specs for dealing damage: spell power, spell hit and crit, then mana regeneration and intellect. Here stamina weighs a bit more because Demonic Embrace multiplies it and Soul Link lets you make use of it.

Destruction: how it plays

Destruction trades effects for direct damage: Immolate, Conflagrate, Shadow Bolt and Shadowburn. It kills fast, which is why it fits groups and dungeons, where enemies do not live long enough for damage over time to pay off. It struggles with mana (it spends more per second than Affliction) and with threat: if you hit before the tank has settled in, the enemy comes for you. It works solo, but rests more between fights.

Level 30 talents, in order

  1. Bane (5): Shadow Bolt and Immolate 0.5 s faster and Soul Fire 2 s. It changes the rhythm of the spec the most.
  2. Cataclysm (3): 10% less mana cost on your Destruction spells. Mana is this spec's limit.
  3. Molten Skin (2): less damage taken (up to 10% with all five). Two points to reach the next row and survive a little better.
  4. Ruin (5): double the critical damage bonus on Destruction spells.
  5. Shadowburn (1): an instant Shadow hit to finish; if the target dies within 8 s, it gives you a soul shard.
  6. Conflagrate (1): consumes your Immolate for an instant Fire hit, with a 10 s cooldown.
  7. Agonizing Flames (3): 10% more crit on Searing Pain and 10% more damage on all your Destruction spells.
  8. Fire and Brimstone (1): more crit on Conflagrate (up to 25% with all three).

With the 5 Talented points: the 3 missing from Molten Skin (up to 10% less damage), a second point in Fire and Brimstone and Shadow and Flame (1), which makes Conflagrate raise your Shadow damage and Shadowburn raise your Fire damage for 20 s (with all five points, Conflagrate also does not consume Immolate).

Priority against one target

  1. Immolate (level 1): the opening hit and what Conflagrate needs.
  2. Conflagrate (talent, ranks from 25): as soon as it is available, on Immolate.
  3. Corruption (level 4) if the fight is going to last; it is what you cast while moving.
  4. Shadow Bolt (level 1): the filler, 1.2 s cast with full Bane.
  5. Shadowburn (talent, ranks from 20): to finish when the target is nearly dead.
  6. Searing Pain (level 18) only if you need fast damage while moving a short distance or want to take threat off someone else: it generates a lot.

Against several enemies

Rain of Fire (level 20) is your ranged area spell and Hellfire (level 30) the close-range one; both can crit and benefit from Ruin. Watch your threat: in a group, wait until the tank has them. Solo, Fear one and burn the other; Destruction has no drains to heal you.

Stats

Spell power (or Fire and Shadow damage) and spell hit first; crit weighs a bit more than in the other specs because Ruin doubles its bonus. Then mana regeneration and intellect, which you notice here because you spend more.

Interrupting, controlling and surviving

The warlock has no interrupt of its own: the felhunter provides it. The rest is fears, curses and stones.

Ability Level What it is for
Fear 8 An enemy flees for up to 10 s. Damage can break it
Curse of Weakness 4 The target does less physical damage
Curse of Tongues 26 The target's spells take 50% longer
Curse of Exhaustion Affliction talent 30% less movement speed for 12 s
Banish 28 Takes an enemy out of combat for 20 s
Subjugate Demon 30 An enemy demon fights for you
Howl of Terror 40 Up to 5 nearby enemies flee for 10 s
Death Coil 42 The target flees for 3 s and you heal for the damage it deals
Drain Life 14 You heal while you hit
Create Healthstone 10 Instant healing you carry in your bag
Create Soulstone 18 A companion, or you, can come back to life
Demon Armor 20 Armor and health regeneration; replaces Demon Skin
Health Funnel 12 You keep your demon alive
Spell Lock (felhunter) 30 The warlock's interrupt, through the demon
Seduction (succubus or incubus) 20 Takes a humanoid out of combat while it lasts

How to level

The basics work for any spec:

  • Fight at your level. Enemies two or three levels above resist your spells more and drag fights out.
  • Train as soon as you can. The new ranks of Shadow Bolt, Corruption and Drain Life make a noticeable difference.
  • Upgrade your weapon. For a caster, a staff or a one-handed weapon with spell power or intellect is worth more than any other piece.
  • Eat well. In Forever, food that leaves you well fed gives 5% more experience per kill.
  • The cozy sleeping bag gives you experience while you rest; see how to get it in its guide.
  • Use Life Tap instead of drinking. You lose health, but you recover it with Drain Life and Siphon Life in the next fight. This is the warlock's way of leveling: almost no pauses.

For going solo, Affliction and Demonology are the most comfortable: the drains and the voidwalker let you chain fights without stopping. Destruction fits better in groups and dungeons, where it deals its damage before damage over time would have had time to pay off. You can change talents with the trainer in a capital city, so it is not a decision for life.

When to change demon: imp until 10, voidwalker for almost everything you do solo, succubus or incubus when you want more damage and the enemy does not hit hard, and felhunter against casters from 30.

Professions that fit

  • Tailoring: the warlock wears cloth, and cloth pieces with spell power are what you are after. You also make your own bags.
  • Enchanting: you improve your weapons and gear, and wands give you a ranged attack without spending mana. It pairs well with Tailoring: you disenchant what you sew.
  • First Aid: bandages to heal without mana. With Life Tap, health is your other resource.
  • Alchemy: your own mana and healing potions, if you would rather not depend on the auction house.

More about professions and the camp in professions and camp.

Races that fit

Five races can be warlock. None is mandatory; these are the racials that matter to a warlock and why.

Alliance

  • Human. The Human Spirit (+5% spirit) makes Life Tap go further. Sword Specialization gives 2% spell crit if you carry a sword. Will to Survive removes stuns.
  • Gnome. Expansive Mind (+5% maximum mana). Eureka! makes your next 3 damaging abilities cost 10% less and deal 10% more damage; since October 1 it does not apply to periodic effects, but it does to channeled ones, so it fits Shadow Bolt, Incinerate and Drain Life. Escape Artist frees you from slows.

Horde

  • Orc. Blood Fury raises spell power by 10% for 15 s. Shatter Curse removes banes and curses (useful against other warlocks). Axe Specialization gives 1% spell crit with an axe.
  • Undead. Will of the Forsaken breaks charm, fear and sleep: against other warlocks it is what you notice most. Cannibalize restores health and mana. Touch of the Grave drains a little health with your spells.
  • Troll. A new combination in Forever: there was no troll warlock in Classic. Berserking speeds up casting by 10% for 10 s and Rapid Regeneration gives back half your health if you can stand still for 6 s.

If you have trouble deciding, the race guide has every racial.

Consumables

  • Food: whichever leaves you well fed, for the 5% extra experience and the regeneration. Cook it or buy the one for your level.
  • Drink: less than other classes, because you have Life Tap, but carry water for after a long fight.
  • First Aid bandages: healing without mana between fights.
  • Healing and mana potions: for the fight that goes wrong. In dungeons, both.
  • Your own stones: Create Healthstone before every dungeon (for you and the group), Create Soulstone on the healer and, from 28, Create Firestone (or the spellstone from 36) on your weapon.

Useful macros

A macro packs several commands into one button. These use the official spell names and the current game's syntax, which works in the beta. To create one: type /macro, click "New", paste the text and drag the icon to your bar. All of them, with a copy button, are on the warlock page; what each piece means is in the macro guide.

What is not known yet

  • The official warlock explanation. Blizzard has published those for the hunter, the druid, the priest and the warrior; the warlock's is still missing.
  • The beta reaches level 30. Everything above that (Incinerate, Wrack, Death Coil, Inferno, Bane of Doom) comes from the client, untested in game.
  • Whether Incinerate, Wrack and Bane of Havoc are trained or only come through talents. The client's spellbook lists them (Incinerate and Wrack at 40, Bane of Havoc from 1), but they are also talents at the end of Destruction and Affliction.
  • The Amplify Curse talent still says Curse of Agony in its text, even though that spell is now Bane of Agony. It is probably text that has not been updated.
  • The numbers may change. Blizzard has touched the warlock in two beta patches and will keep adjusting before November 4. The talent calculator warns you if a saved build stops being valid.

Frequently asked questions

Which spec is the most comfortable for leveling solo?

Affliction or Demonology. Both keep going without stopping: Affliction heals itself with Drain Life and Siphon Life, and Demonology has more stamina and a voidwalker that takes the hits for you. Destruction also levels solo, but it rests more because it spends more mana.

What is the difference between a bane and a curse?

In Forever they are two different types of effect. A warlock can only have one bane active on each target (agony, doom or havoc) and one curse (weakness, recklessness, tongues or exhaustion), but both can be on at the same time. In Classic, Curse of Agony competed with the other curses.

Which demon should I use for leveling?

The voidwalker from level 10, for almost everything. It takes the hits and lets you cast without interruptions. The imp works before 10 and in groups; the succubus or incubus when you want more damage; the felhunter against enemies that cast spells.

Can a troll be a warlock in WoW Forever?

Yes. It is one of Forever's new combinations: in Classic the warlock could only be human, gnome, orc or undead. The troll brings Berserking, which speeds up casting.

How does a warlock regain mana without drinking?

With Life Tap: it converts health into mana, and in Forever it scales with spirit. Then you recover the health with Drain Life or Siphon Life in the next fight. In Affliction, Soul Harvest also gives you mana regeneration when something under your Drain Soul dies.
