Hardcore will not be there at the November 4 launch. Blizzard presented it at BlizzCon as part of what comes next, and the roadmap places it in winter 2026-27, with no exact date. Here is everything Blizzard has confirmed about the mode in one place, and what it has not said yet.

When Hardcore arrives

  • Not at launch. The official rulesets article is plain about it: Hardcore will be available sometime after launch.
  • In winter. That is what the BlizzCon roadmap shows and what the developers repeated in interviews (PC Gamer). There is no date.
  • In the official "What's Next" panel recap, Hardcore is listed among the post-launch updates, alongside more raids and dungeons, PvP updates and a revamped classic raid.

The rules we know

Forever has no realms: when you create a character you pick a ruleset (Normal, PvP, RP or Hardcore). We cover that in depth in no realms. For Hardcore specifically, Blizzard has confirmed this:

What Hardcore Normal, PvP and RP
Death Carries lasting consequences You resurrect as usual
Ecosystem Fully enclosed Each ruleset is its own world
Factions You can create characters of both Both on Normal and RP; only one on PvP
Battlegrounds Separate: never mixed with anyone May include players from different rulesets
Collections and Legacy Nothing from outside comes in; what you earn inside does go out Account-wide, shared across the three
Changing ruleset Only on death (transfer) No hopping: you have to create a new character

Two things worth keeping apart:

  • Shared battlegrounds are the exception to "each ruleset is its own world": a battleground can bring together Normal, PvP and RP players. Hardcore stays out of that.
  • The one-faction rule belongs to the PvP ruleset, not Hardcore. On Hardcore you can have Alliance and Horde characters, as on Normal and RP.

What happens when you die

This is the biggest change from Classic Hardcore. In Forever, a Hardcore character who dies can transfer to another ruleset, PvP included, and keep playing there. Wowhead notes that in Classic Hardcore the only way out was a realm without permadeath; here you choose where you go.

The transfer is one-way: nothing you do on other rulesets comes back into Hardcore.

Blizzard has not said whether the transfer is free, automatic, or whether the character keeps everything it had.

Hardcore and Legacy

The Legacy System grants account points for completing challenges. On Hardcore it has its own rules, according to the official Legacy article:

  • Challenges completed on other rulesets do not count on Hardcore.
  • Challenges completed on Hardcore do count on every other ruleset.
  • PvP challenges cannot be done on Hardcore, so the mode will launch with 12 challenges of its own.

In practice you start Hardcore with Legacy at zero, but whatever you earn there also serves the rest of your characters.

What we do not know yet

  • The date, beyond "winter".
  • The finer rules of the mode: whether there will be trade, auction house, mail or grouping restrictions like other permadeath modes, how dungeons are handled, and whether there will be any kind of "self-found". Blizzard has published nothing on this for Forever.
  • The transfer on death: cost, what the character keeps and whether it is done in-game.
  • Hardcore-specific rewards beyond the 12 Legacy challenges.
  • Whether world buffs work differently. There are creator comments going around, but no official source.

We will add it as soon as Blizzard publishes it. Meanwhile you can plan your character with the race and class randomizer and the talent calculator, or vote on which ruleset you will play.

Frequently asked questions

When does Hardcore come out in WoW Forever?

After the November 4, 2026 launch. The roadmap places it in winter, with no exact date.

What happens if my Hardcore character dies in WoW Forever?

Its Hardcore life ends, but it can transfer to another ruleset, PvP included, and keep playing there. It cannot go back to Hardcore.

Can I play Horde and Alliance on Hardcore?

Yes. The one-faction restriction belongs to the PvP ruleset. On Hardcore, as on Normal and RP, you can create characters of both.

Does Legacy count on Hardcore?

With its own rules: what you do outside does not count inside, but what you do on Hardcore counts on every other ruleset. Hardcore will have 12 Legacy challenges of its own, since PvP ones cannot be done there.

Are Hardcore battlegrounds mixed with other players?

No. Battlegrounds can bring together Normal, PvP and RP players, but Hardcore stays separate.
