The Hall of Thanes is WoW Forever's lowest-level new dungeon and one of the two you can already play in the beta, which goes up to level 20. It sits beneath Ironforge, in the crypt where the dwarven kings of old rest, and someone has broken in to loot it: everything points to the Dark Irons. It is for levels 13 to 18 and is the Alliance counterpart to the Horde's Ruins of Lordaeron.
This guide puts together what you need before going in: the five quests and where to get them, the four bosses one by one and what each one drops, with stats. The data comes from the beta client and Wowhead's Forever database; what isn't known yet, we say.
In short
| Level | 13-18 (the final boss is level 16) |
| Where | Beneath Ironforge, in Dun Morogh |
| Faction | Alliance (the Horde has to sneak in) |
| Bosses | 4: Faldrim Anvilmar, Magmatus, Plunder and Durgen Dirgehammer |
| Quests | 5, available from level 9 |
| Experience | Almost all of it from quests: 3,900 to 4,900 each. Regular enemies hit hard and give very little |
The key point: don't go in without the quests. Running it without them means going for the boss loot and little else.
The quests: pick them up before you go in
Two are picked up in Ironforge and one in Dun Morogh; The Treaty of Understanding starts from a tablet you find inside, and for An Ancient Grudge the database doesn't record who gives it. All of them offer a choice of an uncommon-or-better (blue) item of item level 17-18, which is a lot at these levels.
| Quest | Level (from) | Given by | What it asks | Reward to choose |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Old Ironforge Incursion | 16 (9) | Earthseer Farsen, in Dun Morogh; turned in to King Magni Bronzebeard in Ironforge | Durgen Dirgehammer's Head, from the final boss | Calibrated Blunderbuss (gun, 15.9 DPS, +3 Stamina) · Ironforge Greathammer (two-handed mace, 16 DPS, +4 Strength, +7 Stamina) · Deepblaze (fire wand, 12.1 DPS, +3 Intellect) |
| An Ancient Grudge | 15 (10) | No NPC recorded | Put the spirit of Faldrim Anvilmar to rest | Catacomb Cloak (cloak, +3 Stamina, +6 attack power) · Deepgrave Trousers (leather legs, +7 Strength, +3 Agility, +3 Spirit) |
| Important Heirlooms | 15 (10) | Thom Filch, in Ironforge | Collect 8 Dwarven Heirlooms inside the dungeon | Dwarven Tome (off-hand, +2 Spirit and up to +4 spell damage and healing) · Tomb Robber's Gloves (cloth gloves, +3 Stamina, +6 Intellect) |
| The Restless Dead (Alliance only) | 15 (10) | Afadra Dunwall, in Ironforge | Kill 15 Enraged Apparitions and 10 Tormented Souls | Dusty Belt (leather belt, +5 Agility, +4 Spirit) · Cryptwalker Bracers (mail bracers, +4 Strength, +3 Stamina) |
| The Treaty of Understanding (Alliance only) | 16 (9) | Starts from a tablet inside | Take Magni the peace treaty between the Bronzebeards and the Wildhammers | 3,900 experience and reputation with Ironforge and the Gnomeregan Exiles |
All of Forever's new quests, with every item's tooltip, are on the quests page.
Which group to bring
The usual: one tank, one healer and three damage dealers. What helps most here, with the level it's learned at in Forever:
- Against the final boss's fear: the shaman's Tremor Totem (level 18). The priest's Fear Ward comes at 20, above the dungeon.
- Crowd control for the packed rooms: the mage's Polymorph (8) and the rogue's Sap (10).
- Interrupts: the shaman's Earth Shock (4), the rogue's Kick (12) and the warrior's Shield Bash (12).

The bosses, one by one
Faldrim Anvilmar
The spirit of an ancient dwarven thane consumed by an old grudge, and the target of An Ancient Grudge. An easy fight, but he puts a nasty debuff on the tank: clear the enemies around him first so the healer only has to deal with him.
| Loot | Slot | Stats |
|---|---|---|
| Spiritwraith Drape | Back | +4 Agility, +3 Spirit |
| Ephemeral Choker | Neck | +4 Stamina, +2 Spirit |
| Aetherwisp Bracers | Wrist | +3 Stamina, +3 spell power |
Magmatus
An elemental that arrives with a summoner. Kill the summoner first and tank Magmatus away from the group, because his area damage hits anyone close. In the beta client this encounter is called Infurnus; Wowhead's guide calls it Magmatus and its loot is the Fang of Magmatus, so we use that name.
| Loot | Slot | Stats |
|---|---|---|
| Kindlegem Girdle | Waist | +4 Strength, +4 Stamina |
| Flamefist Grips | Hands | +2 Strength, +4 Agility, +4 Spirit |
| Fang of Magmatus | Main hand | +4 Intellect, +18 spell power |
The Fang of Magmatus is the piece a caster at this level will notice most: +18 spell power on a one-handed weapon.
Plunder
Another elemental, with a knockback that throws you a long way. Stand with your back to a wall or a cleared area so nobody lands in an unpulled pack.
| Loot | Slot |
|---|---|
| Golemheart Stave | Staff |
| Golemguard Chest | Chest |
| Treads of the Protector Golem | Feet |
The stats of these three pieces can't be read yet: the beta client ships them encrypted.
Durgen Dirgehammer
The Dark Iron commander in the lower vaults, and the final boss (level 16). His head is what Old Ironforge Incursion asks for. He fears, so clear the enemies along the edges of the room so nobody runs into them; but leave the golems alone, they pull him into the fight. This is where Tremor Totem shines.
| Loot | Slot | Stats |
|---|---|---|
| Durgen's Crescent Axe | One-handed axe | Encrypted in the client; the most sought-after piece in the dungeon |
| Direhammer Leggings | Legs | +4 Agility, +7 Stamina |
| Robes of the Disgraced Thane | Chest | Encrypted in the client |
Who each piece is for
- Tanks: Kindlegem Girdle, Cryptwalker Bracers and the Ironforge Greathammer if you don't use a shield.
- Physical damage: Catacomb Cloak, Flamefist Grips, Direhammer Leggings, Dusty Belt, the Calibrated Blunderbuss for hunters and, if it drops, Durgen's Crescent Axe.
- Casters and healers: Fang of Magmatus, Dwarven Tome, Tomb Robber's Gloves, Aetherwisp Bracers and the Deepblaze wand.

What we don't know yet
- Drop rates. The beta database doesn't have enough data yet.
- The stats of the encrypted pieces, including Durgen's Crescent Axe.
- How exactly the Horde gets in. The press says they'll "have to sneak in"; there's no further official detail.
Anything that changes with each beta build will go to the dungeon page and this guide.
