Lore

Thousands of years ago, Highborne rebels who fled Eldre'Thalas after the War of the Ancients forged a pact with the wind spirits and built their civilization in Skywall. Today the Skyborne (shen'dorei, “the hidden people”) are in crisis: their elemental benefactors have vanished, the pylons holding Zephras together are failing and parts of the isle are falling into ruin and darkness. The Windshapers, the High Order and the Al'Aketh vie for the isle's future: some seek answers from the wind spirits, some want to reclaim their ancestors' arcane traditions and others have turned to darker powers.

What we know

  • Blends Classic Warcraft looks with Skywall-inspired architecture: tall pines, pale stone buildings with blue roofs and spires in the mist.
  • Blizzard pitches it as a “self-contained” surprise, added “with care and restraint”.
  • At character creation you pick a side: Horde Skyborne (Windshapers) can be Shamans and Alliance Skyborne (High Order) Mages; both can be Warriors, Hunters, Rogues and Druids.
  • The panel tied it to Thunderfury and Prince Thunderaan, where Classic first hinted at the elemental planes (press).
  • BlizzCon demo: an intro flyover with voiceover, several starting quests at once tracked on the map, and trips back to the class trainer to learn abilities (press).
  • Hands-on players describe crumbling ruins and sweeping wind gusts (press).
